The Platt Self Twist Spinner Type 888

The Platt Self Twist Spinner Type 888

The Platt Type 888 Self Twist Spinner produces a two ply yarn without employing spindles, rings or travellers; thus eliminating completely the factors to productivity of conventional ring spinning. Spinning tension – often very high on ring frames – is replaced by much lower, controlled winding tension; reducing spinning end breaks and virtually eliminating the emission of fly and dust at the spinning operation.

On the Self Twist Spinner (Figure 1), yarn is formed by inserting alternating ‘S’ and ‘Z’ twist in the fibre strands emerging from the drafting system by passing them between rollers which reciprocate along their axes as they rotate to deliver the threads. A complete cycle of ‘S’ and ‘Z’ twist occurs every 22 centimetres. Adjacent threads are then brought together and allowed to self twist around each other to form a two ply yarn construction.

Comparison of Processing Routes

Delivery speed is normally 200 metres per minute (240 yards per minute), irrespective of the yarn count produced. This delivery speed is approximately 12 times greater than that of a ring frame spinning fine count yarn. In addition, the machine produces a two fold yarn directly at the spinning operation; each winding unit representing the productivity equivalent of 24 ring spindles.

The Self Twist Spinner will process wool qualities of 56’s and finer, with a total oil content up to 1.5% either in 100% form or in blends with synthetic fibres and 100% synthetic blends of equivalent fibre length and denier. Three denier is the coarsest synthetic fibre normally processed.

No special preparatory equipment is required to produce the rovings or light weight slivers to feed the apron drafting system of the Self Twist Spinner. Three passages of gilling are recommended followed by a conventional roving or rubbing finishing machine which may have either double meche bobbins or can delivery. Up to 16 rovings or light weight slivers can be accommodated in the creel of the Self Twist Spinner. The maximum roving or sliver weight is 1.0 gram per metre.
